Test vs. Sample knitting
What is test knitting?
Test knitting is an invaluable part of the design process! When designers create a new garment they need to ensure the pattern and instructions read well, are cohesive, and that the pattern produces the garment in the way the designer planned.
Test knitters are knitters of all skill levels who offer their time and experience to “test” the pattern. The garment they create stays with them. Test knitters receive the working pattern and finished pattern for free. If yarn is sponsored then test knitters will receive their yarn for free. If yarn is not sponsored, then test knitters will purchase their own yarn for the project.
While deadlines are important with test knitting, it usually not necessary to finish the garment if life gets in the way.
What is sample knitting?
Once a pattern is tested and finalized, sample knitters help the designer showcase various different samples of the pattern with all the pattern options (think different colors, necklines, buttons bands etc).
Sample knitters receive the yarn for free and are often paid by the yard or meter for the final garment. They do not keep the final garment, instead that is shipped back to the designer.
Deadlines are incredibly important for sample knitting because you are being paid to produce a sample the designer likely needs for marketing and content. If you’re unable to finish a sample knit you are still paid for the yardage you’ve completed.
